GALLERY: Northern Noise Live – July with David Ward, We The Dead and Coves

Last month's Northern Noise Live was perhaps our most interesting yet. With hoards of music loving Mancunians taking shelter in the cosy Castle Hotel from the looming rainclouds outside an eager rabble gathered to check out our three amazing acts. Our spectacular opener David Ward kicked things off into a slow burning groove thanks to his Jeff Buckley-esque guitar stroking all the way from Vancouver Canada. Next up, energetic Manchester noise makers We The Dead fired their sounds at the crowed forcing them to forget... Read more »

INTERVIEW: We The Dead

We've already heard from our opening act David Ward - we've even heard which tracks shaped his musical career but now it's time to check out the second band on this month's bill, the atmospheric We The Dead. Despite hailing from humble Manchester, this alt-rock five piece try their hardest to buck the trends set in stone by the city's previous musical acts. The end result is something that entices and unravels at its own pace, a dreamy brand of indie-rock... Read more »

NN LIVE: Rough Fields Announced As Headliner For June

It's almost time for our next NN Live gig! Last month's was another sell out and a great night all round. This month, on June 30th, sees Levenshulme’s Rough Fields recreating his soothing electro-acoustic sound-mosaic using live looping in the intimacy of The Castle Hotel. The man behind the project – James Birchall – self-produces in a spare room, incorporating field recordings and unique percussive instruments (“boxes, crates, tins, tent-pegs…”) to create uplifting distinctive textures. Already a series of acclaimed EP’s have been released via his Bombshop label and the full-length debut Edge Of The... Read more »

GALLERY: NN Live – May with David Strafford, Jaws and Bluebird Kid Clark

Last month, Northern Noise Live returned to The Castle in Manchester after a month absence. For our fourth event we lined up a trio of acts exciting enough to rival any summer festival line up. When doors finally opened, dozens of Northern music fans escaped the sweltering heat-wave outside and headed in-doors to the Castle hotel to secure a good spot in front of the Northern Noise stage. The unforgettable evening saw acoustic singer-songwriter David Strafford open up the night, followed by a blistering set... Read more »

INTERVIEW: Torches

Backstage at Manchester’s Castle Hotel London five-piece Torches gather in a dimly-lit room to be interviewed. As daylight dwindles outside, the crepuscular setting coincidentally illustrates their penchant for musical darkness. Their current Soundcloud uploads – fittingly recorded in a basement – feature frontman Charlie Drinkwater crooning hauntingly in a sparse, organ-led gothic atmosphere punctuated by off-kilter drumming and metallic guitar strumming. “I’m quite aware we sound very earnest,” Charlie confesses before laughter ensues. In reality they’re an optimistic bunch. Drummer Stephanie’s glass is literally half full as... Read more »
