Stockport has proven itself as a hotbed of talent over the past few years, most notably providing the Northern music industry with the mighty Blossoms. A new offering from Stockport are four-piece electro indie band Kashmere who, having gained interest from the likes of BBC Introducing Manchester with their song “Tokyo”, are definitely ones to watch this year.
Since 2016, Joey, Charlie, Andy and Freddie have, in their own words, been merging “anthemic, stadium sized indie rock, with a cut of melodic brooding synth-pop to create their own unique form of sonic worth” – which couldn’t be more accurate. Although the band only have five songs available online to speak of, it’s clear that they’re really making their mark and carefully curating a unique sound that is both nostalgic of 80s synth sounds and simultaneously fresh and extremely easy to get immersed into.
Their debut track “Blow Your Mind” is a mix of all things good in the indie genre, like the hazy sound of Mystery Jets, the anthemic chorus element employed by Sundara Karma and the mildly melancholy feel of Wolf Alice, all rolled into one epic debut. “Tokyo” seems to be that bit different, much more of a synth pop influence and somewhat Blossoms-esque, which may be what makes the song feel so familiar and easy to love. It is not often that a new band will take the time to curate such refreshing and new sounds so early in their career, but it’s what sets Kashmere apart from other Manchester bands currently around at the moment.
Other tunes worth hitting play on include “Codeine” and “Hoxton” which are definitely worth a listen, whether you’re anticipating a set from them this summer or not. Speaking of which, having played venues like The Ferret in Preston right down to The Monarch in London, Kashmere have a slew of upcoming gigs coming up here, there and everywhere in 2018, including Night People in Manchester to round off their April tour on the 28th – tickets are cheap as chips too and free entry is even offered in some places, so don’t hesitate if you’re interested. If @ManchesterDose on Twitter is talking about them, they must be something special! Visit @Kashmereband on Twitter or KASHMERE on Facebook for more details.
